Julz`s Ms.Marvel Issue# 1 & 2 Review

Kamala is written in a way that makes her relatable to younger readers and her being a Muslin teenage girl serves as no excuse not to.

 While she is insecure and uncomfortable with her religious background, there are a lot of opportunities to connect with the character. She dreams of  superhero action and admires, of all people, the Avengers. She has issues with her family who are overly protective and tries to sample all manners of  high school life like parties, popularity and fanfiction.

There are your standard teenage troupes such as the jock, the popular girl or the obvious love interest in the form of the best friend and more. However, all of this only to make her more in common with readers as a troubled yet refreshing and vibrant character. Although the carbon copy of Regina George known as Zoe does come off a cliche stereotype.

Both issues are to show an origin story for the new hero, but even without a main villain it does set up a mystery as to how Kamala received her powers and what she can really do or what her new purpose entails. And seeing the soon to be hero  trying to get used to her powers does come across as funny and entertaining to see. Even more the character is put on the right track as she wants to make a difference in the world with her new powers.

There is no major conflict other than with Kamala`s  family and classmate, but at least there was some genuine superheroing and perhaps next issue there will be more of that.

Alphona`s art is expressive, has a very western cartoon style and the bright colors compliment the soft penciling work giving the comic a light, aesthetically pleasing feel.

It is still early in the comic to judge it immensely but these two first issues do the job of connecting Kamala to readers.

Ms. Marvel Issues# 1 and 2 together receive 4 out of 5

Julz`s Loki Agent of Asgard # 2 Review

Loki Agent of Asgard continues to be entertaining read as Loki, while a hero is still a clever, witty trickster as he tries out speed dating and regaling his latest mission.

Issue 2 didn`t pick up were the first issue left off making this issue feel like a one shot, but it`s still too early to judge it immensely. The issue  itself is very funny with every scene, possibly more than the first issue, and like before Loki is still seen as a competent anti-hero but never comes off as unlikable or brooding. 

In fact, as Loki converses with a woman of truth he is still able to entice her yet show genuine compassion. Making it believable that Loki is indeed a good guy. However there are still moments where Loki is Loki but now he means well to repent for his crimes.

The dialogue and comedic moments never feel like they are wasted. Story itself is decent but ends before you get your fill and not exciting but entertaining enough to see more of Loki`s deviousness. 

 And props to the penciler and colorist as the art is vibrant and the expressions are well drawn. 

The book itself still has time to pick up on the story but as of now is still a funny read. Loki Agent of Asgard receives  a 3.5/5. If Loki fans are interested this art and humor along is worth it.

Julz`s New Comics Day 12/21/13 Review

Julz`s Young Avengers (2013) Issue 11 review

This month`s issue of Young Avengers prepares us for the climax, Mother is just as evil as ever.

Mother`s threat knows no bounds as she sets her sights on our hero`s home dimension with evil versions of our Young Avengers as her army. Along with our hero`s evil exes.  Despite not having a story arch she is indeed sparing no expense in her evil ways.

Dialogue wise, this issue has some funny moments with Noh-Var`s beard and Loki admitting to his misdeeds. As well as Mother`s cheerful evil talk. However what dosen`t work is how Prodigy explains their plan. Rather showing how much of a troupe Kieron Gillen`s understanding of teenagers is. But then again the dialogue in this issue also shows each individual`s personalities more in this issue, even very relatable. This was needed considering Kerion Gillen has been trying to balance out each member of the team with each issue, which has been a challenge for him.

A few plot twists here and there with Loki partially revealing the truth to his actions, Mother`s plan and Noh-Var`s secret online chat making, which are very interesting and possibly will be expanded in future stories.

Visually this issue steps up in terms of designs by restoring Loki to his adult form, or rather young adult form. Needless to say this design will be drawing in more female readers to Young Avengers. Our Penciler, Jamie McKelvie and Colorist, Matthew Wilson have been consistently pleasing throughout  this entire series run. Despite the ending being a nightmare fuel for any Hulkling fans, be warned of the disturbing images you will see though very few.

Great to see the story finally reaching its climax after seeing such heart breaking events lead up to it, Gillen`s writing actually becoming more interesting and filled with more possibilities and the art work still having its surprising and impressive. Making this comic a very good read for any Young Avengers (or Loki) fans and is not without its merits.
